St. Andrew is proud to recognize Orange Shirt Day on September 30th, 2020
What is Orange Shirt Day?
Orange Shirt Day grew out of the experience Phyllis Webstad-an aboriginal child had when her shiny new orange shirt was taken away from her on her first day at residential school. Her story has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.
St. Andrew support of Orange Shirt Day
Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for YCDSB schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. It opens the conversation on all aspects of residential schools and it is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects and the legacy they have left behind. Orange Shirt Day will help to promote healing in our YCDSB Catholic school communities where indigenous and non- indigenous students study, work and play.St. Andrew’s will be recognizing Orange Shirt Day on Wednesday, September 30th. All students and staff are encouraged to wear orange that day, for example – an orange ribbon, orange shoe laces, orange socks, or an orange top. Students are also permitted to wear civvies or bottoms other than those recognized as part of the school dress code on this day i.e. jeans etc. There will be activities and lessons in the school that will foster students’ understanding of the impact of residential schools.
